33. Expectations
Expectations versus reality was the hardest part of it all. For instance, what she expected to be a casual walk to class ended up turning into a breakdown in the middle of a crowded street.

52. Deep in Thought
“You know, it always worries me when you get all deep in thought like that,” Adam commented, peering over at Kaitlynn curiously. “You okay in there?”

68. Hero
“If it’s any consolation,” Adam started slowly, waiting for her to look back at him. “You’re still my hero.”

93. Give Up/63. Waiting
“What do we say when we want to give up?” Kaitlynn knew what he was doing; she used to do it to him. It was a tactic, that’s all it was.
However, it had worked for Adam, so she tried to pretend she didn’t hear how pathetic she sounded as she answered. “Not today.”

10. Precious
"You’re just so darn pleasant in the morning." Adam mused as Kaitlynn shoved him out of the way of the coffee pot. "Such a precious flower. I’m surprised he’s survived this long."
Kaitlynn shot him a look that could wilt flowers as she reached through the cupboard for her dolphin mug. “That’s because I’m only an asshole to you in the mornings.” She replied before sticking it her tongue at him.

47. Voodoo (I don't fucking know, don't judge me)
"You think I should grow a beard?" Adam questioned, staring at himself in Kaitlynn's mirror and running his hands across his jawline. "French girls dig beards."
Kaitlynn raised a brow at him before laughing. “Can you even grow a beard?”
Adam chucked a pillow at her. “Oi, fuck off.”
“It’s a legitimate question!”

Hey, Carly, you have a paper to write.
LOLNOPE. I'm gonna work on my PTSD theme challenge (sorta).
(Though, tbh, I wrote these when I was supposed to be sleeping last night)

7. Heaven
More and more she find herself questioning the existence of heaven, and if it were real, had he been redeemed enough to be there.

17. Blood
Sometimes when doors shut too loudly she could feel blood pooling in her palm, and her fingernails would scream at her that it wasn't real as they dug into her arm.

26. Tears
The tears would not cease despite her frantic attempts to wipe them from her cheeks before they were seen, and she cursed herself for becoming so weak.

31. Flowers
Adam had spent the weekend with her, scouring the streets of Lyon collecting as many potted flowers as possible for her balcony, because it was hard to be unhappy surrounded by so much color and life.

42. Standing Still
She ran because it was so much harder for the fear to find her when she wasn’t standing still.

45. Illusion
For at least a few weeks after he had shown up out of the blue, she still found herself startled by his presence as though every single interaction before had only been a dream.

46. Family
Kaitlynn had grown up hearing that family was the most important thing in life--that family would always have your back and be there to pick you up when you fell. If that were true, then Adam was the only family she had, because she could be shattered into million pieces on the floor and her mother would still tell her not to be late for dinner.

48. Childhood
Their childhoods were all fucked up in one way or another, whether it was because of parents that weren’t there or parents that were there in all the wrong ways. Either way, at this point, they’d gotten pretty good (or at least passable) at raising themselves.

54. Tower
Kaitlynn tried to make herself as small as possible as Adam knelt to her level so as to not tower over her. “You’re safe,” he promised softly.

61. Fairy Tale
Kaitlynn continuously begged Seanna not to romanticize this thing between her and Tristan because far too many terrible things had happened to warrant the kind of fairy tale Seanna was looking for.

75. Mirror
Kaitlynn avoided eye contact with her sullen reflection as she pulled the comb through her still damp hair.

80. Words
Kaitlynn tried desperately to speak but instead of words she could only manage gasps and strangled sobs as a means of explanation.

82. Can You Hear Me?
Kaitlynn had a disturbingly blank look on her face as Adam waved his hands in front of her eyes. “Earth to Kaity—can you hear me?”

88. Pain
Even after the cuts had closed, if she even slightly overexerted herself, she could still feel pain as sharp as the days when they were fresh.

91. Drowning
Sometimes it felt like she was drowning in memories and sensations she wished she could forget.

“I think I would just...” he paused looking for the right way to phrase it, “...feel better if you weren't out there running alone. That's all.”

Kaitlynn looked up at him through her lashes as she tightened the knot on her bright orange running shoes. She straightened and brushed a stray cat hair from her shorts. “You're more than welcome to come with me.” She hummed. Tristan pressed his lips together in a thin line of distaste.

Kaitlynn was a runner. She'd been running since she was twelve years old: 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons, whole marathons—she'd even  attempted the Les Coursières des Hauts du Lyonnais ultra-marathon during the spring of the previous year. Kaitlynn ran as often as she could, sometimes twice a day if her schedule allowed for it. She even volunteered to be the coach for the cross-country team at the school where she taught (Tristan often entertained the idea that she loved running more than him).

Tristan was most decidedly not a runner.

“Yeah, no. I think I'll pass.”

He had taken her up on that offer once before. That's when he discovered that a 10K was considered a 'light run' for the girl. He had regretted his choice every single time he so much as shifted in place for at least a week after that “adventure.” Of course, when he asked Adam if he would run with her (because surely soccer players like to run, right?), the other man just laughed in his face and inquired about his mental state.

He was ridiculous for worrying and they both knew it. Life had been almost bland the past five years, and she was safe out there. He wasn't going to win the argument of her staying in, and admittedly she was much more agreeable when she was running. Much like a puppy: a tired Kaitlynn was a happy Kaitlynn.

Kaitlynn just hummed in amusement and leaned for a quick kiss. “If it makes you feel any better, I'll just stick my keys between my fingers,”she grinned as she maneuvered her house key between her knuckles, “and if anyone gets too close, I'll just jab them--” She dug the pointed end lightly into the flesh between his ribs and laugh aloud as he swatted her hand away in surprise.

“Just be careful.” He muttered, absently rubbing the place where she had got him.

“Yes, dear~”
